Filtered Through a Mustard Oil Tin
Dysentery, jaundice and diarrhea: Kalyan’s family used to suffer from these and other waterborne diseases often. The bacteria-filled water they used for their daily needs caused the family to get sick frequently. Kalyan tried using empty mustard oil tins to clean the water of its impurities, but the makeshift filters didn’t work. Never ending hospital bills and medical treatments constantly scraped away at the family’s finances, and as a daily laborer with small wages, Kalyan already struggled to provide for their everyday needs. Using contaminated water only made their situation worse.
Family Receives Pure Water
Then one day, Kalyan’s family received a BioSand water filter through a local GFA-supported pastor named Durja. The filter cleaned the water, and the family gradually regained their health. They no longer suffered from waterborne diseases, and fewer medical treatments and hospital visits eased Kalyan’s financial burden.
Clean Water Brings Good News
Two years later, as two Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastors came to perform a routine cleaning of the filter, Kalyan gladly told them all about the difference the gift had made in his family members’ lives. The pastors prayed and shared just how much Jesus loves them. Kalyan and his family are now able to live healthier lives and continue learning about God’s grace and forgiveness through the gift of clean water.

I am at loss for words. Something we take for granted and even waste, is life to so many people throughout our world. I thank the Lord for Pastor Marty and others serving God in Asia. As believers we are commanded to be salt and light to those who do not know about The Living Water that Jesus gives.
