Heavy monsoon rains, intensified in some places by Cyclone Komen’s landfall in late July, flooded several regions of India and Myanmar, destroyed thousands of acres of crops, affected millions, left thousands homeless and killed hundreds. In Myanmar alone, more than 100 people perished.
As affected regions struggle to rebuild, Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported Compassion Services teams are doing their best to provide relief to the suffering, including many Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastors and the believers in their congregations.
Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers in Manipur, India, banded together to package rice, lentils, potatoes and salt for flood victims.
On August 12 and 13, Compassion Services teams distributed relief packets to flood victims from 17 villages in Manipur.
In addition to supplying food, the teams were able to provide tin roofing sheets to some needy families.
Some of the workers had the opportunity to minister of the hope found in Christ by sharing booklets about Jesus’ love.
In one city in Myanmar, flooding caused a severe landslide that destroyed hundreds of houses and blocked roads and bridges, disrupting transportation and causing shortages of food and clean water.
This home, belonging to an elder of a fellowship led by a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor, nearly collapsed in the landslide. In total, the landslide destroyed more than 60 homes of believers belonging to congregations led by Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastors, in addition to one church building where a Gospel for Asia-supported pastor led worship services.
Thousands of people are staying in relief camps in this city. Seeking to help these landslide victims in the midst of food shortages, Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers provided lunch and dinner to approximately 4,000 people in a relief camp on August 8. In addition, a Women’s Fellowship group provided blankets and clothes to some of the victims.
To encourage those staying in the relief camp, a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor has also been leading worship services in the relief camp each night, reminding the people of the promises found in God’s Word.
